A family-owned business located on Lake Road in the city of Rocky River, Ohio, we have built a reputation of excellence in this outstanding Northeast Ohio suburb.
Our story began many years ago with the Normandy Apartments, an independent senior living facility. Throughout the years we have undergone significant improvements. In 2013 we devoted more than $3 million to update the Normandy Care Center. In 2016, understanding the evolving needs of our growing, vibrant senior community, we opened the Breakwater Apartments to reflect the independent, sophisticated, active atmosphere our residents requested.
In 2017, we invested more than $20 million in renovating and building a brand new facility on the Normandy property. Construction of Lakeside Assisted Living, a new assisted living and memory care facility, opened in late 2018. Every detail has been considered in the thoughtful design and comprehensive services. Our spectrum of care accommodates your needs at every age and stage: Independent Living, Assisted Living and Skilled Care.

Our story began more than 50 years ago with the Normandy Apartments, an independent senior living facility. Building “A” was constructed by Neville A. Chandler in 1967 and building “B” followed shortly thereafter in 1972. Chandler, a highly respected Rocky River resident and developer, recognized that many of his neighbors and friends who were approaching retirement wanted to continue living in familiar surroundings. As a family-owned-and-operated business, we have kept this same vision of building a reputation of excellence in one of Northeast Ohio’s most outstanding suburbs.
As a family-owned establishment, we take immense pride in our legacy of care and dedication to our residents. Since 1986, the Orlean family has been at the helm, passionately steering The Normandy towards its status as a premier retirement community in Northeast Ohio. Our vision is the same as when we started: to provide a community where residents can embrace life, let go of daily tasks, and enjoy the freedom to make the most of every moment.
Our current owner-operators, the Orlean family, have been with the Normandy since 1986 and have developed it into the unique, premier retirement community it is today. The Orleans made their first mark on our campus in 1991 with the addition of The Normandy Care Center, our skilled nursing facility. In 1994, the Orlean family’s Atrium project connected independent living buildings “A” and “B,” which facilitated the strong sense of community we are known for today.
Their influence continued with the newly renovated Breakwater Apartments.
Inspired by our campus’ close proximity to the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, the Breakwater Apartments offer spacious, modern floor plans that accommodate the independent, active lifestyles of seniors. At Breakwater, we empower our residents with supportive, personal care plans and á la carte services to live comfortably and conveniently.
The Orlean family has kept the same promise of Chandler’s original vision: to provide a community where residents can embrace life, let go of daily tasks and enjoy the freedom to make the most of every moment.
This same promise lives on as the Orleans have expanded the Normandy campus and welcomed its third facility: Lakeside Assisted Living. This new assisted living facility was thoughtfully designed and planned to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable living environment with modern amenities. We look forward to working closely with the community and keeping the same family promise of continuing to provide the best service for Northeast Ohio seniors and their loved ones.
